Gerald Dickson initially joined the Territorial Army in 1982 as a Combat Medical Technician. Private (Pte) Dickson then transferred to the United Kingdom Special Forces (UKSF) where he qualified as a Parachutist and served for 20 years.
He transferred back to Corp 202 Field Hospital from UKSF where he served as Deputy Ward Master Nursing Squadron later becoming WO1 Ward Master. He acted up as Regimental Sergeant Major on exercise during his/her absence. He was deployed on Operations (Ops) Herrick and participated in exercises in Cyprus, Europe, Norway and the US.
During his time within the British Army, he trained as a Paramedic and served with West Midlands Ambulance Service. For more than 40 years he delivered emergency care to the sick, injured and dying.
He held a managerial post within West Midlands Ambulance Service and has been involved with inequality in the NHS with the Workforce Staff Forum and the first cohort of the Workforce Race Equality Experts.
He is a graduate of the BEACON Senior Leadership programme for BME staff, achieving a Post Graduate Certificate. He then went on to achieve a Post Graduate Diploma (Distinction) and then a Master’s (Distinction) in Health and Social Care Management.
Gerald Dickson continues to support veterans as the treasurer for the Federation of Birmingham Ex Service Association and is a Standard-bearer for the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC).
